CHATTANOOGA CHESS CLUB

Members and Friends,

I’m still getting the hang of Mail Chimp so continue to bear with me. The news of the day in random order:

1. Firstly, let me welcome Alden Mucciorone, Rex Zhu and Dagan Jackson to the club. Alden has been coming to club for some time but I am only now figuring out what Mail Chimp buttons to push to get him on the mailing list.

2. We continue to meet in the Teen Room at the Y until 316 is renovated. Our attendance has been good given the change to Wednesday night.

3. We continue also to run our Game 15 Minute tournaments at club but I want to point out to all that if you would prefer to play a longer time control game, just let me know and we will find you an opponent. The same goes for Game 5 Minute players!

4. R. Boston, B. Robinson, B. Kendricks and J. Kade traveled to Crossville for the Cumberland County Fall Open. They put in a good showing. You can see the results on the USCF web site.

5. We are looking to have our club championship, at the Y, on one the last two Saturdays in November. Call me or drop me a line to let me know what date you prefer. I will announce a day soon.

6. I have included a tactics problem from a very old game. I will try to have one with each newsletter or, possibly, an end game problem which I hope with be instructive for all. Remember, where tactics are concerned, the forced continuation is the only path. The theme in this case is “decoy.”

Anderssen – Kieseritsky, Berlin, 1853. White to move.

All for now.

CHATTANOOGA CHESS CLUB

Members and Friends,
I am just starting out on Mail Chimp so bear with me as I create and issue our newsletter updates. I will be playing with photos and such and offering tournament information.

  1. Firstly, we are now meeting on Wednesday nights at the Downtown YMCA at the usual time 6:00 PM to 9:00. I usually arrive a bit earlier so may take your chances on getting in some additional chess.
  2. We have been holding our club three round/game 15 tournaments on a pretty regular basis and have had good attendance. Please arrive in plenty of time be to entered into the tournament and paired by 7:00 PM.
  3. Thanks to Holly Livengood who has donated some handmade mugs as prizes for the club tournament. And thank to Jim Kade who given the club three chess clocks.
  4. I have had opportunities to play several games with Phil Gardner at Morning Point on Shallowford Road. Anyone interested in playing chess with Phil may speak to me and I will give you some direction. I know that Phil enjoys his chess and misses the club.
  5. I want to welcome Chad Meson and Alden Mucciarone to the club. Alden is our newest member in good standing.

All for now.

There is much to relay to all of you as I have gotten behind. But let me be brief given the important news item that the club will be meeting on a new night at the YMCA:

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, OUR NEW MEETING NIGHT WILL BE TUESDAY AT THE USUAL TIME AMD PLACE: DOWNTOWN YMCA AT 6:00 pm.

(Will – Looks like we must change the web site information.)

Speaking of which, I must mention that we have a new web site created and installed by our web meister, Will Thrash. We are going to use Mail Chimp for updates so be patient while I get trained.
All for now.

(You’ve got my cell so call me with questions if needs be.)

Club News August 8, 2016

Chattanooga Chess Club

Members and Friends,

I’m just getting caught up with new participants and events at the club while “trying” to help Will Thrash populate our new web site which is currently under construction. So, here’s the latest news patched together. If I am repeating past updates, then so be it.

1. There are a bunch of folks who have arrived at club for the first time and others who have returned after a long hiatus. Returning players are Mike Bacon, Greg Hollingsworth and Antonio Nelson. Unfortunately, school is starting back up so Mike will be out of touch for a while. Antonio returns after an absence of about three years! He’ll be going back on night shift so we’ll miss him for a month or two.

2. We welcome new players Robert Roberts, Paul Fears and Ben Markum.

3. Last club saw 14 players in the nightly G15 tournament. I’ll try to remember to announce who comes out on top in a more timely fashion. Tom Trivers and I played two match games which, for me, was very instructive. So, total, we had 16 participants.

4. Jim Kade, Ralph Boston, Bethel Hendricks and Billy Robinson have hitting the tournament circuit. The Georgia Open is next in their sights.

5. As reported earlier, Phil Gardner now resides at Morning Point on Shallowford Road. Stop by and play some chess with him if you have the opportunity. Morning Point’s number is 296-9700. Remember to avoid meal time hours.

All for now.

Club News July 10, 2016

Members and Friends,

Just a brief few notes.

1. We’ve been having good turnouts of late due, I believe, primarily to the G15 tournaments we’ve been running. I want to remind players, though, that if we start out with an odd number of participants, someone’s going to get a bye and have to sit the round out unless a latecomer arrives. I ask that you be patient as other players do wander in after the first round starts and things seem to even out.

2. On that note, please keep in mind that the first round of our Thursday night tourneys must, should, will start at 7:00 in order to play the games in a leisurely fashion and finish in plenty of time for the Y closing. This means, of course, that we need you there for pairing well in advance of the 7:00 start … say 6:30?

3. As a added incentive, I think that we (the officers) will consider offering a first place prize out of our library.

4. Finally, Will Thrash has offered to assume duties as our web master and he has a new site constructed which will be installed as soon as we can get him plugged into Go Daddy! All this, of course, is pending approval of a majority of the club officers which I fully expect to happen. Failing that, I will assume dictatorial powers, dissolve the board and install Will. (Sorry, lost my bearings there.)

All for now.
